Engie is a global reference in low-carbon energy and services. Together with their 170,000 employees, customers, partners and stakeholders, they are committed to accelerate the transition towards a carbon-neutral world, through reduced energy consumption and more environmentally-friendly solutions.

Inspired by their purpose (“raison d’être”), they reconcile economic performance with a positive impact on people and the planet, building on their key businesses (gas, renewable energy, services) to offer competitive solutions to their customers.

The briefing

The energy market in Belgium is in full transition. We are switching from fossil to renewable energy sources at an accelerating pace.

The increasing share of renewable energy sources is also the cause of ever greater fluctuations in the energy grid. To keep the energy supply both reliable and affordable, energy suppliers have to evolve with the changing energy market.

MIG 6 is the name of a new generation of market processes. MIG stands for “Market Implementation Guide”. It describes the information exchange between the distribution system operators and other market parties. The aim of MIG 6 is to achieve a less error-prone, (cost-)efficient, more customer-friendly operation of the energy market.

This entails optimizing existing processes and rules and introducing new rules. There are also some fundamental changes in the way the market players will communicate with each other.

Of course, this entails changes in the data and related reports. The focus was on the reports based on data from SAP Business Warehouse (BW).

Our solution

We investigated the possible impact on existing reports of data changes in the source systems and in the SAP BW system and identified new reporting needs. During several workshops we refined the analyses to the needs of the business.

Then we focused on the testing phase. For the planning, we took into account the tests and migrations in the source systems and SAP BW. Two test phases were provided to thoroughly test each report.

We defined test cases for the end-to-end tests. E2E testing uses techniques that simulate the usage of an application. By replicating the actions a user would take, the test helps evaluate whether the results meet the requirements or the expected outcome.

We determined the testing needs in terms of:

  • Access
  • Design
  • Data integrity
  • Delta load

To follow up on the planning, we analysed the progress of the test cases in order to discover any bottlenecks.

The outcome

Thanks to the revision of the data sources, transformations, integrations and existing reports, the new reporting at Engie is fully compliant with the MIG 6 market processes. In this way, the employees are better equipped to deal with this changed energy market. Thanks to the extensive testing process and the workshop with the end users of the reports, we are also sure that the reports meet all their needs and requirements.

In a project with major changes to an existing structure, many new processes and a large number of stakeholders, collecting needs and obtaining the correct data is often a complex matter.

Thanks to our structured approach, planning, transparent communication and experience in such projects, we managed to successfully go through the test phases and finish them on time.
